I am not the best photographer but I want to share some fun tips on backgrounds. I took all of the pictures below in my sister's backyard. The difference is I used a velvet background behind the better photos. It makes a huge difference, huh? It's just a big peice of black velvet I bought at the fabric store.
Both of the top two pictures were taken in the exact same spot in the backyard in the exact same lighting. It was an area that was just outside of the direct sunlight (barely into the shade).

We wrapped Sophia in the black velvet. One sister held her in the velvet and another held the black velvet behind her head.

Here are some more. Notice the positioning is super important too. Take pictures in a bunch of different positions and angles until you find what you like.
We took these pictures spur of the moment and I didn't like the design on Sophia's clothes so notice how in the picture that says Sophia and Daddy, I used PS to change it to a more of a solid pink.
This angle isn't that good and the background wasn't right so I moved and added the black backdrop. I'm really happy with it.

I have a couple more ideas with different backgrounds that I'll post later.
