Anyone have good suggestions on a scanner to buy? Mine is broken and was hoping for one for my birthday. Any ideas on what to look for in a scanner...any special features that are good to know about?

There was a thread on this a long time ago. There are some good ideas there and maybe someone else will have another idea for you. http://forum.digitalscrapbookmemories.com/showthread.php?t=1718&highlight=scanners

I decided to get an Epson Perfection 4490 Photo scanner. I needed the capability to scan slides. It isn’t the fastest scanner but it is okay for me. I usually set it to scan four slides then I’ll go and do something else for a bit. I have used it for scanning documents as well and it seems to do a better job than my last HP scanner. I also liked that I could buy it on the internet and then pick it up locally so I didn't have to pay shipping.

notes as I have been reading about them

Epson reviews seem to be hot or cold. Some places they say they are great, others say they have had technical issues with them

What is up with the Epson "photo" series scanners? Anyone have one? looks like you can feed film negatives into them??

Come on Angie. How cool would it be to have a scanner large enough to scan your children?? That would make you happy. You would have the choice to take a photo or scan :)

Oh wow -- I want one of those!!! But now the price is $3000. Ugh.

Anyone have an Epson photo scanner?? I was looking at a much cheaper one - I like their printers, wondering what you guys think of their scanners.

I like mine. I got it in Aug and its a Epson 4490. It is slow on the slides but it does a good job.

Do you guys regularly use your Epson for scanning LOs?? I'm thinking if I had a good one here then I wouldn't have to trek out to the LSS every week or so to scan (and it'd save me money in the long run :D )

And how well does it do the slides?? We've got tons of them here from DH's childhood that probably aren't in the best of shape. His parents stored them in a very dirty garage.

I think if you tried to scan your kids, you would blind the poor things in the process.

I have been scanning slides for the last couple of days. It takes about 20 minutes at 600 dpi to scan four slides on the Epson 4490. I just get it set up, leave it and do other things. When it's through I start it all over again. This way I don't mind the time it takes.

I just did a slide that was probably 50 years old with scratches and dirty spots. This one had also faded through the years. The first time I scanned it was so light you couldn't even tell who was in the picture. The next scan I set the dpi higher, changed the brightness and contrast setting to the lowest possible. I am really pleased with the result. I will still have to do some adjustments in PSE but its better than I ever expected.

I decided that slides just take time and patience to figure out the best scanning adjustment for each slide. Good luck. It has been fun walking down memory lane.
