I am trying to get a good grasp on the art of lighting. Any good tricks or ideas or maybe websites that can help me out? For some reason this is a hard one for me. I have a Nikon D70 so I need to learn apature and shutter speed better, I think.

Have you checked out the book Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson? That is an excellent resource for learning about the manual modes and capabilities of your camera... and it includes lots of tricks for how to set your camera for different situations.

well this might be an obvious answer, but evening is best for reallly good lighting, and when it is overcast is my favorite time. the colors seem to pop more to me. they are richer. the sun just washes everthing out and you get those annoying shadows that are all over the place. so stay away from midday if it is sunny. that is if you were looking for outside. for inside if it is sunny open windows and use natural light. i don't know if i helped at all. i hope i did :)

I second getting Understanding Exposure. I LOVE that book and it explains everything so clearly with great examples. I've read it several times and bookmark helpful parts.

My Tip for shooting in full sun: (the best bet is to be able to find open shade or chose those overcast days, but that's not always prossible.)

Make sure the light is behind your subject and there shouldnt be anything behind you the photogapher. You want the Ambient Light behind you to reflect back on your subjects face. So if you have trees, a building, etc. behind you then you need to either move or use a reflector.

O-kay, here are some photos that I recently took while I was thinking of lighting. Some I like, some I hate. I seem to have a full sun problem so thanks for the tip, Alicia!

I kinda like the way contrasty black and white with the bad sun glare.

I am getting there, I guess.

Anyone want to share some of there good and bads for research?
