View Full Version : Recipe Swap Layout

On the forum board here back in March the forum held a recipe swap layout contest. After getting approved, we will be having another recipe swap layout (minus the contest).
We will use pretty much the same rules from the last swap...
Recipe Swap Participation Rules:
1) Create a layout with Digital Scrapbook Memories CDs. For copyright reasons we will not exchange layouts that were created with any papers and embellishments other than those from Digital Scrapbook Memories.
2) Post your completed layout on this thread by November 1, 2007.
3) Anyone and everyone is invited to participate.
4) Layout must include a food recipe such as an appetizer, beverage, soup, salad, side dish, main dish, dessert, etc.
5) Layout must include a picture of your recipe. The picture MUST be taken by you unless you have written permission to use the photo.
6) Include your name somewhere on the layout.
7) Give proper credit to the author of the recipe if known.
8) The standard size for recipe card is approximately 6x4. So for this swap the size is going to be 6x4 so we can actually put them in our recipe books and use them.
Photography Tips:
When taking pictures of your recipes do what you can to take the picture without a flash. To be able to take a good picture without a flash you need to have a lot of bright indoor light. I usually take the food near the brightest window in my house at a bright time of day. I set the food on a table just out of the direct light. Look at the bright light coming in from your window and take your picture where the shadows start. This picture from Rosanne Miske illustrates what I am trying to describe. She uses this same principle in taking home portraits. Notice that her backdrop is just to the right of the bright window light on the floor. Part of the backdrop goes into the bright light but her subject would be standing right where the shadow starts. Because the light in your home may be different, try putting your subject in various places such as left or right of the bright light. You could try close to the window or move a few feet back as well. You certainly don’t need a backdrop for this - just do your best to have the least distracting background you can have. I usually move some furniture pieces out of the way. As you have probably figured out, this tip is not just for food pictures. Try taking pictures of people in this lighting too. Once you have the picture on your computer you can enhance your picture in your image-editing program for even greater results.
This is the thread from the last swap...

Sounds like fun! I'm in! Now all I have to think about is the recipe, and figure out the lighting for the photo.

I love stuff like this; now how are we going to get each others recipes when it is all finished? Girls, will you come up with some new recipes; it seems like each time I do this, someone still submits funeral potatoes and chicken enchiladas--ya know the one with sour cream and cream of chicken soup. Sorry, I'm such a boss, but I'm in NEED of some new stuff. Thanks to all.

Hey Jamie, since you put the layouts have to be created with Digital Scrapbook Memories CDs I'll totally be happy to give away prizes. I'll give away 3 CDs. Jamie, I'll let you draw the names of three participants to be the winners.
BTW - you guys never have to ask permission to start a swap. I think it's awesome! thanks for starting this one Jamie. Do you want me to collect the high res files for you so that the participants can download them from our site to print???

This is a great idea. I saw something like this on another scrapbooking forum and they wanted each participant to pay $35 to get all the recipes printed out. So I didn't want to do it for that reason. This sounds like it will work great because I can just print each page that I want on my printer. Cool, thanks for the idea. I would love to join in, guess I need to think of something really yummy to make.

for the recipe swap what is the best way to start for a 6x4 document? cause i go to crop and it just doesn't seem right, but maybe i am just retarded! any help?
Alyson
10-19-2007, 03:33 PM
Kelli, when you start a new document, select the size to be 6X4 rather than 12X12.
Jenny McDonald
10-19-2007, 03:37 PM
go to File>new>Blank File> then it will let you make a new document the 6X4 size. Then you can either crop your paper to the 6X4 size or just drag it and move it around to how you want it.

10-19-2007, 04:25 PM
:ook, so i got the recipe part scrapped, i just need to make it and take pictures. is it ok if we have the recipe on more than 1 4x6 card? Cause i couldn't fit it all on one!
Alyson
10-19-2007, 09:41 PM
I guess I'm the first with my page finished. I had to do it now or I might not have had time. I did the page in 6X4 and 6X6 because I have started making pages for a cookbook that is 6X6. I thought I would post both so you can choose which one you would rather have. It's pretty basic because if was hard to fit the whole recipe/instructions onto the page.
Also, do I need to send the high res file to April? April, would you like me to e-mail it to you?

I had a quick question...when you talk about high res files sent to April...what does High Res mean specifically...I know it stands for high resolution but is that just what it is when you save it as a JPEG on PSE? I want to make sure I'm saving my LO right...
Kim Hansen
10-22-2007, 02:54 PM
Girls, you know what I like about this site? Everyone is SOOO NICE. THANK YOU THANK YOU for your kindness. I can't wait to get everyone's recipes. I'm excited!
Kim Hansen
10-22-2007, 02:56 PM
Amy, sorry I can't answer your question about High Resolution, but I know soon Alyson, April, Alishaw, Quinn or some of the others will probably come through.
Alishaw
10-22-2007, 04:14 PM
Amy-when you save your layout in PSE as a jpg you have the choice of 1-12 quality. For your regular printed layouts, choose 10 or above. When you want to post a layout to the internet, choose File/Save For Web... and I like to use Medium quality and then change the number or percent until it makes the layout small enough in KB to post (244K or under here) So depending on your layout most of my 12X12's for posting are medium quality and about 15-20% of their original to make them fit. Does that make sense? If not, PM me and I"ll have you hop on my computer and I"ll show you.

Ok, let's see if I can make this work. My first recipe ended up being about the same as Scrapy's with one small difference. But I already had it done so I'm posting it anyway. Then I made another one and couldn't stop. These are actually to first things I've scrapped digitally. I told myself I need to get caught up on what I have printed before I can really go digi. I'm working on a few Christmas projects in Photoshop that I will probably post to get some feedback, but they're not done. Anyway, let's see if I can get these to post...

You can't be more behind than me. You can scrap fast and I can't. I bet you will be done LONG before me. I just finished my 3rd page. My house is a disaster so I need to do the running cleaning lady thing before my hubby gets home and wonders what I did all day.

Jenny that title is so cute! Great Job!
Kelli - Um...I think my font was a couple different sizes..I don't think it really matters and depends on how long/short the recipe is. Can't wait to see yours!

Here is my recipe. I kind of copied Jaime's recipe layout because I had so many words to fit on. I hope that is ok. I am a newbie and need all the help I can get. I tried this recipe tonight and it was really yummy. You have to like balsamic vinegar to like this recipe. My hubby thought the sauce would be good on a salad as well. It looks long, but it is easy and good. Enjoy.

I'm not sure if this is why you are asking... but if I'm worried my font size is too small but not sure I check it by clicking View>Print size, that way you can see it the actual size it will print.

OK Kim!!! Here's the problem-It's been a crazy few weeks and so here were my options: Smart Ones Microwave Dinners-NO! Chicken Nuggets-I'm sure you all know how to push 45 sec on the microwave! Halloween treats for pre-school-Halloweens all but over, so who'd want those?! Cafe Rio, Olive Garden, Harmons Salad Bar-not the cook and felt a little creepy taking a picture of their food! Let's just face it-I'M A FAILURE AS A COOK!! Thank goodness I have scrapbooking to fall back on! But I still want a copy of all yours ;)
PS Love your avatar Kim!

Kelli, the LATE night paid off--you did an excellent job, I too, like the triangles, circles, stacked pictures, flowers. I can't wait to make those carmel bars--ya know, in life, I judge a good trip or day on a couple of things and FOOD is one!!! I LOVE GOOD FOOD!
Alishaw, you make me smile, no worries, I tell ya though, you know how to make kids--they sure are cute :) loved your Halloween pictures of them.
Alyson, I'm impressed with your service to our country and I personally want to tell you THANK YOU. That is quite a responsiblity and commitment and I want you to know how much I appreciate your dedication to all of us. You're quite the lady, now you are in pharmacy school-are you at the U? I have two nephews, whose wives are in the program there.
Jaime and April, a big thanks to you too for coming up with this idea and collecting them all so that we can print them. I JUST LOVE FOOD!
Thanks, for your comments on my avatar--it's a little flashy. I took my daughter to Hannah Montana this last weekend and the flashy color behind me is Hannah's tour bus. It was a great time.
Girls, to all of you, HAVE A GREAT DAY. LOVE, Kim

Okay, I have some sad news about my recipe card! I went to work on Tuesday and while I was at work my dear husband decided to upgrade our iMac to the new program Leopard. I saved my recipe card and was going to send the high res to April on Wednesday, so I deleted by food pictures on Tuesday before work. Well, the recipe card got deleted in the upgrade! I have no pictures of the food and a fridge FULL of leftovers! I'm so sorry ladies! I can type up the recipe and leave it like that or you can all wait one more week and I'll make it again and you can have the pictures with the recipe card. What do you want me to do?
Note to self: NEVER leave the house without asking husband if he is going to do stuff to the computer.

Aww Kim, that makes me feel so good. I feel that way about all the people in the military. I miss it a lot. I am actually still doing my pre-pharmacy stuff right now at Weber State, so I have a lot of school left. I'm not even sure if I'll make it through all that school or get into Pharmacy school, but that's my current career goal...it may change in the future.
Jenny, that really stinks about your recipe card! I hope it won't be too hard to remake it, but we're all patient. :)

Everyone's recipes turned out so great!! This was fun, I'd love to do it again... even expanding it to a once a month thing and having different topics each month such as desserts, one dish meals, soups, salads/side dishes, etc... maybe I'm getting ahead of myself but I love to try new things!
And Jamie - I'm so glad you had a deadline, I'm a person who needs them or I don't get anything done! I'm such a procrastinator.

There is a problem with my recipe card. I had it printed for a shower I am going to. It looks absolutely darling, but the edge of the words is cut off. I guess I had my text too close to the edge. My recipe was probably to big for the card. I can redo it, and I will just take the photo off to give it more room. Let me know what I should do about it. If you don't mind it cut off a bit, I will leave it. We haven't been told how to get those yet right? Or did I miss that?

I was having that problem too... this is how i fixed all my pages...
For Example...
If i was doing a 12x12 page... I would crop it to a 12.001 x 12.001. Then it won't cut off anything... Does that make any sence?
supermombritt
11-07-2007, 08:57 PM
It does. I just feel bad that you guys will have a bad recipe card. So I guess if I do a 4x6 then I would crop it to a 4.001x6.001? Is that right? But wouldn't that make the photo size just slightly larger than what I want? Now I have confused myself.

Alyson, I have to go to a murder mystery dinner tonight and i think that i'm going to make your brownies! Looks so good!
Jamie, did you make the brownies? If so, how did they turn out? Were the directions understandable?
