I'm new to digi scrapbooking. I made 3 books for my 3 oldest kids using the Scrapbook Factory, but I found it's way too limited. So I wanted a change. I've been downloading stuff and I'll be using PS Elements, but that's as far as I've gotten. I'm intimidated. I know nothing about PS.

I live in the Frozen Tundra of northern Utah... Cache Valley. If I can get my friend to go with me I'm going to go to the Park City event and learn some stuff. :)

even if you can't find a friend, you'll make lots of friends quickly over the weekend! :)
I say, come either way. :)
Welcome to digi- isn't it fun?!?!? :)

It is fun. I hate the cutting and gluing stuff. Tried that when my 12 yr old was a baby. Spent a ton of money to get all the supplies and hated every minute of it. I'm not exactly the most creative person so that was part of my problem and still is but this is way more fun, in my opinion.

So should I come for the entire weekend or just the beginner part?

tpowers
02-21-2008, 09:41 PM
I would come the entire weekend. Even if some of the more advanced stuff is harder you will have a lot of new techniques and ideas. I am not super creative but, I love that I can preserve my memories and make cool gifts for people.
Ask any questions that you have here because that ladies on this board are fabulous. Also, you may want to think about getting one or all of the beginer CDs. They have tutorials that will help you learn too. And the tips section is great. I printed a bunch and keep them where I can read them.
Good Luck! I hope to meet you in Park City.

I think you've sold me on the weekend and the CD's. My husband is deployed but it just so happens he'll be home that weekend. He's going to love it.... "See you later honey... Here are the kids. Have fun. I'll see you in a couple of days." lol

I hope my friend comes because I really don't want to be the pathetic newbie who asks to hang out with you guys because I don't know anyone. lol

I'm on a board where I'm #1 poster with over 25,000 posts in just over a year. Pathetic, I know.

I was hoping you really did have a green face. You'd be easier to pick out of the crowd in Park City. ;)

I've been googling digital scrapbooking looking for freebies to download, a forum with nice and knowledgable people to join (found it :D), and stuff to buy. Basically it seems I'm procrastinating the day when I actually start in photoshop.

Shellie, I really hope you do come to the retreat! It will be so much fun!! Plus, even if you are a beginner but stay for the whole retreat, there will be lots of goodies to take home, so you should come for the whole weekend. I love your avatar, btw.

DSM is going to be at the Family History Expo in Logan on the 22nd of March. I don't see this event on the events page, but I'm planning on going up there to help out at the expo. I don't think there will be classes, but you could stop by the booth and we could at least show you a few things in PS. And, then you will have met a few of us before the retreat. :D There is also going to be free classes in Sandy on the 5th of April if you wanted to get started a little before the retreat.

Thanks for the info. I will definitely stop by the Logan expo. Sandy may be more difficult with a deployed husband it makes it more difficult to get to things because of the kids, but I'll see what I can do.

by the way Shellie, Photoshop is not that hard. Just take one thing at a time and learn it. Play with it and practice. My husband is a PS pro, but he's not here to help. So I get to learn it on my own. I keep hearing it's not that difficult.

Thanks for the encouragement. I need to just do it and stop being chicken. If I can get my master's degree while raising kids and being pregnant, with a husband gone, I should surely be able to do this, right?:p

Of course, I now have a student loan payment and am not working to pay it. lol My plan was to go back to work because our youngest was starting school full time. I don't have to work, thankfully, so I wasn't about to put baby in daycare just to use the new degree. So, here I am with a master's, a student loan and a new baby. :D

Also, I havn't been up North forever but, you can get the CDs at Hobby Lobby if you have one. Hope that helps.

And you'll be converted to digi forever. :) The TIPS section is great as was already mentioned plus there is always someone willing to answer any question you might have here on the forum. You'll usually get several answers!

I love the Logan area, my great-grandma lived there for years and we still have some relatives up there.

Being from Anaheim (I grew up about 2 blocks from Disneyland) we had a saying.... "Welcome to California. Now go home." :D The toursists in that area were frustratng in the summer. Now that I've moved to Utah and I'm a tourist I think that saying is very rude. :cantBreathe:

Yay for people who listen!!! Hey Jenny, when I start talking fast or get excited I start to stumble on my words, and usually end up mixing them all around.... like for example, I have two friends... names are Chad and Brady.... I was talking to them one time and called them Brad and Chady!!! I do it quite often, and It's usually pretty funny when some words come out! They sound all weird and funny!! Kinda crazy I tell you!!

In person I'm more quiet if I'm in a group... usually. I was really shy as a kid, but I've kind of outgrown that. ;)

Listening is a good skill. I was always the listener for my friends too when I was younger. Now, I listen, but then I tell them what I think. lol I didn't used to do that.

Turlock! Yeah! I might know your grandparents!! Turlock is only about 30 min away from Merced. You have to go through Merced to get to Turlock from Anaheim!! Fun! I miss Cali...

They retired there, but my grandpa passed a way quite awhile ago and my Grandma moved from there. They had a little farm there. I used to spend about 6 weeks with them every summer. I loved it.

I miss Cali sometimes... especially in the winter. :D But I love raising kids here better. I can let my kids walk around the block and not worry. I couldn't do that in California.

Jenny, I love the pic of Grace on your blog. What a cutie.

Are you teaching her sign language? I read that she signs happy. I've been teaching my daughter some signs. Her favorite seems to be "more"... lol... she always wants more of everything.

Jenny McDonald
02-23-2008, 11:59 PM
We've been trying. But she only likes to do happy. We want her to know how to "say" the usual eat, drink, more, etc. because my MIL is hard of hearing almost deaf.

Shellie
02-24-2008, 12:02 AM
I do it because it cuts down on the frustration until they can say those words. Anna does eat and drink too and adds her own little thing... she smacks her lips.

How old is Grace?

lanz
02-24-2008, 12:03 AM
Jenny very cute daughter and blog, I am still working on mine. My two older kids knew the signs milk and more. My one-year old pretty much uses more when he is hungry. They say they kind of make up there own signs for things.

Jenny McDonald
02-24-2008, 12:05 AM
Grace will be one year in March. I thought she was signing milk at one point because she was doing something close to it but then she's do it right after a bottle and every few minutes so I don't think she is. I don't know I could be wrong though.

Is your daughter crawling and walking around everywhere?

Jenny McDonald
02-24-2008, 12:09 AM
She's crawling and cruising. She can stand by herself if she doesn't know she is but as soon as she realizes we are not helping her she drops to her little bum.

lanz
02-24-2008, 12:13 AM
Jacob isn't crawling or standing up to things, my other two were crawling by 10 months. He is quite the easy going baby and is pretty content to just sit there. I am getting a big anxious because his baby brother is coming in May and I would like him to be a little bit more mobile by then.

Shellie
02-24-2008, 12:14 AM
Anna turned one last week (she was supposed to be born in March, though. She was 3 weeks early). I noticed that the signing did better about 2 weeks before she turned one. Maybe that has something to do with it. They just need to make the connection.

Interesting about the signing. I'll work harder on it i think.
My nephew doesn't know how to crawl yet either and he is four days younger then Grace. His doctor says not to worry about it though. I can see where your coming from though with the whole wanting him to be mobile before your other one comes. That will not be fun if he doesn't. Good luck!

I was also very intimidated by digital scrapbooking and I'm pretty good with a computer. So, I took a Photoshop class at my local community college and now I'm loving it. Shellie, where is your husband deployed? Is he in the guard or active duty? How long has he been gone and when is he supposed to get back?

He was activated from the Inactive Reserves in Feb of 2002. He had previously been in the guard for forever. ;) I was tired of him being gone one weekend a month and 2 weeks in the summer and he wasn't ready to quite leave altogether yet. So he transfered to the IRR.

He was activated for 1 year and they sent him to the middle east. He was in Saudi but traveled throughout the region. They extended him for another year and he spent most of his time in Iraq. He came home for 2 months and was activated again. Extended active duty. This time they sent him to DC. He was there from May 2004 until October of last year. They made him retire (he had too many years as a commissioned officer), but told him they were going to recall him. They had a special program they wanted him to manage. He was home until January 11th. He is back in DC but this time he has to go to Iraq and Afghanastan a lot. These orders were for 1 year. He wasn't there 3 weeks and the 3 star general was asking if he'd volunteer to extend 1 more year.

When he was in the ME we only saw him for 1 week every 6 months. Since he's been in DC we obviously see him more. I usually take the kids back there for spring break and for a month in the summer (except last year because we had a new baby) and he comes home for Christmas and if we have a family "thing" he needs to be here for.

My 6 yr old was 6 months old when he left and my almost 12 yr old 6th grader was in kindergarten.

I was in the military and married to a military man. We dated for 3.5 years and I figured it out that we were only in the same county about half of that time. Then, after we got married, I was stationed in Idaho and he was in Texas for the first year of our marriage. We saw each other twice in that year. It was tough, but it sounds like you have had it a lot tougher.

Yes, he's Army. They authorized us to move 2 years ago, but at the time he was only supposed to be there for a year. We didn't want to uproot the family, sell the house, etc. just to come back in a year.

Wow, I think you had it tougher. At least we had years of being married and had an established (for lack of a better word) marriage. Having that at the beginning would be hard.

We moved here from California about 10 years ago. We moved into this neighborhood and just rented because we didn't know the area well and wanted to check things out before we bought a house. We ended up loving our neighborhood so much (we have the most awesome neighbors) that we bought the house across the street from the rental a few years ago. That was a fun move. lol We really need a bigger house (ours is 2800 sq ft, but our family is so big and it's just not laid out well) and will have to move soon, but I dont want to leave the neighbors yet.

They started this thread on 4/26/2006. So I did some math, if you round that up to three years that it's been up then they would have to been posting 13824 times a year. If you cut that down into months that means they posted 1152 times! I think if we just lock Kelli, Alyson and Shelli in here then we can do that in about three months! What do you guys think?

For those of you that are teaching your kids sign language, I bought the"Signing Times" DVDs. My son loved them - even my stepkids liked them, and they are about 8and 10 years older. When I taught school I had deaf kids in my class, so I was learning sign language. It is amazing how much you learn when you are doing every day. I wish I could still remember it all. BUT, when I first had my son my memory was still intact. I remember going to my doctors appointment for a well check and they asked how many words he was saying. I decided to count how many words he could say, and how many he could sign. The signing list was SOOOOOOOO much longer than the talking. I was so glad that I taught him so we could communicate. Some people would say "Are you ever going to teach that kid to talk?" Once he really started talking he didn't stop. I wish he still used his signing though, but he doesn't. His preschool teacher did the letter signs with them to help them remember the letters. It was great!

Shellie, my granny and grandpa use to live right by Disneyland - Brookhurst and Ball Road. They ran the Aloha apartments. We loved going there. One time we would go to Disneyland, the next time Knotts Berry Farm. My Dad would always take the kids so my mom could visit with her parents. Then we would go back to the apartments to swim. FUN, FUN, FUN!!!!!!!!
I went to Utah State and I loved it up there. Loved the summer, HATED the winter - that's why I moved to Las Vegas after graduation.:)

Shellie
02-29-2008, 10:06 PM
My 6 yr old still signs a few words out of habit. Anna can sign more words than she can say right now. People think it's adorable and ask if she's deaf. I have to explain that it's about communication. They understand signing long before they can form words.

I know Brookhurst and Ball well. I lived at Katella and Euclid. We used to walk to Disneyland almost daily when I was a teenager. My friends would spend the night and we'd go to D-land. It was general admission back then (you bought the tickets for the rides). We could get in for about 5 dollars. We also knew people who worked there so we got in free most of the time. There was a band that played there and we were kind of like thier groupies (but in a good way :D).

I like winter for about 2 weeks then I'm done. Too bad it last for 6 months.

You said you were a teacher. Did you go through the Utah State's teaching program? I recently got my master's with the intention of teaching in the teaching program. I had a position offered to me on the condition I had my master's. I was halfway through getting it when I found out I was pregnant so I declined the position. I don't have to work so I won't put a baby in daycare so that I can. Anyway, that is my goal. I really think that teachers are not prepared for the "real" world and want to change that. There seems to be too much theory taught and not enough practical every day "this is the way it really is" kind of stuff.

dovegirl
02-29-2008, 10:51 PM
Yes - I got my teaching degree at Utah State. I agree with the "Real Stuff". I had a great master teacher and learned a ton from him, but I wish I could have known earlier. I had some professors that I loved there, some.... well......you know. Did you attend Utah State before your Masters??

dovegirl
02-29-2008, 11:20 PM
I know. Sometimes the parents aren't suprised at all, but sometimes I felt like I was teaching a totally different kid than they had at home.
OH geez! Do i have to worry about my grammar now. I make so many mistakes when I am emailing. i always warn my friends that I do not check for errors, so take it like it is. I don't really even like to use proper punctuation - hope that doesn't drive you CRAZY!!!! My step daughter always asks me why I send messages with complete sentences. I told her that I bet all English teachers hate messaging and text messaging!
Didn't you have to have your masters to teach in Cali or did you have your 5th year???? I was going to move there when I was single, but I needed a 5th year or a masters. I was going to teach in Hemet just so I could have a year to work on it - BUT....I didn't

Shellie
02-29-2008, 11:36 PM
I had my 5th year.

I hate the text messaging "speak." When I text my older kids I always spell everything out. They laugh at me.

I don't always use correct punctuation either. I like to use these ... between thoughts and things. I often don't proof either, but I find myself going back to correct my posts.

I'm not the least bit surprised at what my son's teachers say about him. He is very much the same gregarious child at home and at school.

I totally don't think about it when I'm blogging, sending friendly e-mails, or txting, so I hope it doesn't bother anyone. ;)

My friends sister is married to Donny Osmond's brother-in-law. We are practically related!! lol
no really they say that he is so nice. When my friend's sister got married they said he just stayed behind the video camera. Some one tried to get him to come out and talk to everyone - his response was "This is their day" What a nice guy!

Shellie
03-01-2008, 08:53 PM
He is nice. I got to meet him once and he was very sweet. He stepped on my toe at a concert once too. lol

He had a concert in SLC a few months ago. My seat was a few rows back, but my friend was in the 2nd row. She is one of these people who watch to see if there are vacant seats when the show starts. There was one in the 3rd row orchestra. She called my cell as soon as the concert started and told me there was a seat so I went up there. I sat down quickly and as I looked around I realized I was sitting in the family row! I was right next to his father-in-law. Two of Donny's sons were next to him, Debbie (Donny's wife)... etc. I about died. I thought they'd ask me to leave or someone would come and I'd be in their seat. At intermission his FiL was so sweet. He told me he was happy that I came and took the seat. It was Joshua's (Donny's youngest) but he didn't come because it was the night before school was starting. He was so nice. He stood there for the 15 minutes asking me who I was and how long I had been a fan, etc.

During the concert I noticed Donny looking at the family row every once in awhile. At one point I'm sure he saw me and was wondering who the heck I was. lol

My dad was an English teacher. If we used improper grammar he would stand there and say "What?" until we got it right. It drove me nuts!

Could someone please explain how to post and get these really cute smilies in kindergarten language? I'm getting confused!

dovegirl
03-01-2008, 11:10 PM
I was way confused too.
1 - you go to photobucket
2- you make an account (if you don't have one already)
3- you search for emoticon
4 - click on the one you want
5 - add it to your album
6 - once it's added to your album, go to your album and click on the bottom link (IMG code), this will copy the link
7 - paste it into your message.

This might not be the right way, but it was how I figured it out. If there is a better way, or another way to add them to photobucket, I would love to know also!
Now let have a snack, then we will go out to recess!http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh214/dovegirl1/Emoticon-1.gif

Jenny, I found this pretty cool site that has all the smilies with their codes. You just have to copy the code under the smilie and paste it into your comment. Here's the website address. Just click on the category you want to check out.

http://www.mysmileys.com/

Just a quick warning though. There are a couple of categories that are questionable. I haven't clicked on those categories and I haven't come across anything crude yet, but I don't know if those smilies might be in other categories.

Kelli, here's a cracking up one! I looked all over for one and I couldn't find any, so I set to work on making one. I'm quite proud of it, but it was more difficult than I thought it would be. I almost threw in the towel a couple of times, but I didn't want all the time I had already put into it to go to waste. It's not the best smiley ever, but oh well.

I made the smiley like making a blinkie in Photoshop, but on a transparent background. If you don't know how to make a blinkie, do a google search for instructions...that's how I figured it out. It's a lot of work...or maybe I'm just practiced enough at it.

You are all more than welcome to use the smiley. I think you just have to right click on it and click 'save pic as', then upload that saved pic to your photobucket album.
