Is there a place I can find out more about what exactly this is for? Can someone here explain? I'd love to know more...

Layer masks are fabulous! hehe.. The main thing I use it for is so I can erase around an object (extractions, or making a string go through a tag hole, etc). You put the mask on, then you use your brush tool. The black brush gets rid of whatever you color over and the white brush brings back whatever you took away. So, if you 'erase' too much you can bring it back really simple without having to use undo. It is like the gradient map we learned with the selective color from Alisha's class, only there is no color and you do it on your actual picture, not the gradient.

Very cool. I'll have to try it out when I get a chance.
