How do I make a new layer? I am new and I am trying to make a layout. I am lassoing or using the marquee tool an i don't know how to get it to the layer section to add it to the page. I was able to use the cookie cutter and that went directly to the layer page... what am i dong wrong here? I am on photoshop elements 6

There is a little button near the top of the layers palette that will create a new layer. hover over the available buttons and you will find it.

Thank you.... it is saying it cannot make a layer because no pixels are selected????

Try clicking on an existing layer and then push the button. I don't know for sure if it will help. Lynnette could probably tell you-she's the expert in our family.

I just opened up photoshop to see if I could figure it out. I'm no expert though! Hmmm... I think Madeline's idea is a good one. Try that and let us know if it works.

Welcome Stacy. Are there "marching ants" around what you're trying to move? If not then use your marque tool, select what you want to move or cut, if your cutting then cut it by either right clicking and go to layer via cut or go up to edit (I think) and go to cut. Then drag over. Hopefully this works. If not tell us.

Also, make sure you have the move tool selected. After you use the marquee tool to make a selection area, click on the move tool (the little arrow) before you try moving your item.

I think your question has a couple different parts, but I'm not sure. I think that Madeline and Lynette have the new layer aspect covered. If you read Jenny's post and make sure you use the move tool to move your selections, you should be good to go. Let us know if you need any more help. We're glad to have you here and hope you stick around and ask tons of questions.
