Ok, so here is the new challenge... I got my digi magazine today and saw this tutorial and thought it would be fun to see what you all come up with!! Here are the instructions and my two layouts I did with it!!
1- Drag and drop photo into layout, resizing if necessary
2-Select TEXT tool from TOOLBOX palette. Click to position cursor at bottom left corner of photo and type desired title. In toolbar at top of screen, adjust text size and alignment as necessary so that the title fills entire width of photo.
3-Convert text to editable shape by right clicking text layer's name in LAYERS palette and choosing RASTERIZE TYPE.
4-Create a new layer. check to make sure new layer is positioned just above text layer in LAYERS palette.
5-Select RECTAJNGULAR MARQUEE tool from TOOLBOX palette. Click and drag to draw a rectangle that covers photo just down to the top of title letters. Use EDIT>FILL>FOREGROUND COLOR command to fill rectangle with solid color.
(you can right click and DESELECT to get rid of marching ants)
6-In LAYERS palette, right-click name of rectangle layer and choose MERGE DOWN to combine rectangle with text.
7-Click and drag rectangle layer to position just below photo in LAYERS palette. Right-click name of photo layer and select CREATE CLIPPING MASK (cRTL-ALT-G) to cut photo into shape of merged rectangle and title letters.
8-HAVE FUN!! AND THANKS FOR PLAYING!

Not a perfect layout... but it was fun! These are my aunts and uncles. The one in red is my mom. This was at my brother's wedding this last May.

Here's another one I just finished. This is a road between two cities here where I live and it is a GORGEOUS drive. I have been working for SIX years on getting really good shots of the road in each season. The spring one is a little too close to summer... but I think it still expresses the theme. I have been looking for the perfect way to display these pictures for awhile and I think this works! Thank you Kelli for the inspiration!!!

When I first saw how to do this in the magazine I got so excited and thought it would be fun for all of us to do!! I'm glad you enjoyed it!!

Kelli - thanks for posting this tutorial! What an awesome technique! I'll definitely have to give this one a try.
Great job everyone! Kelly I especially love the one of the seasons - those photos are gorgeous and this simple treatment really lets them shine!
Kelly, I think I want to move to where you live. I would love to drive that road too. I've always wanted to visit Germany. Great LO, by the way.

Lana, I think it's called "simplify" or "simplify layer" in Elements.

...however, I was messing with a picture (trying to do this), and I discovered that you can just make the rectangle, then select the rectangle layer and the type layer and merge them. The merge simplifies/rasterizes the type layer...so you can skip a step.

April is that you scuba diving? I looked at the pic again after I read that you said they are not glamorous and was thinking the body language is pretty cool like the free hand and the legs I love how it takes up the whole page and that you used the text challenge on this picture was perfect!

Is there anybody who can show me how to do this in paint shop pro??? I was able to do the first 4 steps. Step 5 I couldn't fill with foreground color. Beyond step 5 I have no clue what to do. :(
Alyson
07-24-2008, 11:01 PM
Michelle, in stead of filling the foreground, try just making a rectangle with the shape tool. Maybe that will get you past that step. :D
April, I think you look quite graceful in that picture...like your dancing in the water. That looks like a lot of fun!
