Hello everybody!!
I have a portable canner from the cannery just until tomorrow (thursday) morning and I am wondering if anyone knows anything CREATIVE to store that will keep in a can with an oxygen absorber. Know any cool tricks? I have heard that I can can chocolate chips if I pack them in bran. Anyone know anything else out of the ordinary that can be done? Thanks!! I have already done basic stuff, but I have extra cans and want to do fun things!
Thanks all! Love ya bunches!!

Forget the food! Start making crafty gifts!

I'm sort of kidding.... I think it's great that you are working on food storage. I've been thinking about my 72 hour kits. They haven't been updated for a couple years. I have really got to work on those again. Can you imagine having an earthquake or a disaster and not having anything for your kids while you are waiting for help. *MUST*UPDATE*KITS*

I'm like April, I need to work on that again! I figured that my fam will just have to go to my M-I-L in a disaster

When I was in college our singles ward packed 3-day survival kits in those big cans and sealed them up. It had specific menus for each day so you could ration easier. For example, Day 1 breakfast: 1 instant oatmeal, and a packet of tang; lunch: Ramen Noodles and crackers. I probably should make a new one since this was a few days ago. You could also do an emergency kit with matches, bandaids, whistle, etc. Those are always a good idea. Yeah, it's not food and probably not what you were going for but if you have the canner anyway they're always nice to have.

haha, don't forget to tape a can opener to the outside if you do it!

I have a 72 hour kit in a #10 can. We did a few years ago and it has enough food (granola bars, soup packets, instant oatmeal, candy, jerky, even a few juice boxes, etc) for 3 days of survival. We did it 4 years ago in RS and I opened one up the other day to see how it was and besides beings a little hard (granola and jerky) they were definately still edible. We just keep a couple in the car with a little army can opener (called p-52's I think) taped to the top. They are great because they are water proof until you open them.

This is just a suggestion of what to put in:

3 Cocoa Mix
1 1/2 cups trail mix
3 pieces beef jerky
3 fruit rolls
1/2 cup hard candy
2 packets Apple Cider mix
1/2 cup Kool-Aid(the sugar free kind, in a baggie)
3 packets oatmeal
3 packets soup
6 crackers (like the ones from vending machines)
2 packs of gum
Matches
3 Band Aides
4 water purification ts
Candle
